Other:

Sexual assault is a traumatic and invasive crime. Many victims, because of the extremely personal nature of the crime, are hesitant to report the offense to police. Often the fear of investigative, medical and prosecutorial procedures adds to a victim’s reluctance to report. A victim’s distress may also create an unwillingness or psychological inability to assist in the investigation. Officers and criminal investigators play a crucial role in the victim’s willingness to cooperate in the investigation and their ability to cope with the emotional and psychological after effects of the crime. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with the victim with compassion and consideration. Providing them with the necessary information and assistance will make their interaction with the criminal justice system less traumatic. This course is designed to provide officers and investigators with guidelines for responding to complaints of sexual assault. A multi-disciplinary approach is stressed to successfully investigate the assault. Starting with the specific challenges that sexual assault investigations present, the course outlines proper preliminary investigative techniques, victim interviews, evidence identification and collection. Recognizing that law enforcement’s interaction with the victim will dictate the outcome of the investigation; special emphasis is placed on the victims themselves. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: identify the challenges of sexual assault investigations recognize the benefit of a multi-disciplinary approach conduct the preliminary investigation conduct appropriate, effective victim interviews appreciate the on-going process of disclosure respect the unique challenges of sex crimes versus traditional investigations.
